The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。故事主要围绕方家一家人展开，方家以参茸海味店为祖业，十多年均由长女方沛琪（汪明荃）主理，现今发展已上轨道。琪一向是方家支柱，在外坚守祖业；在内则姐兼父职，对一向醉心于演艺事业的妹方沛恩（毛舜筠）及甚受方母宠爱的弟方沛辉，均严加管教，但却关怀备至，对母曾丽卿（谭倩红）则非常孝顺；而与方父老朋友兼海味店老伙计林汉忠（胡枫），感情甚佳，忠更视琪为契女。 琪欲放下事业、家庭的包袱与拍拖多年的男友结婚，却料不到男友已另结新欢，琪悲愤之余，决定提出分手。琪情变之时，幸得一位因工作而认识的朋友方咏诗（李司棋）开解，彼此后来更成好友。此时，诗母冯贵娥（南红）由美返港，透露诗与琪其实为同父异母的姐妹，二人均感晴天霹雳。 诗与琪本性格相投，二人亦惺惺相惜，然上代错综复杂之恩怨，加上重重误会，却把二人推到互不相容的地步，在事业及感情上均有纠葛。。
